FATEHPUR SIKRI OVERVIEW-

Fatehpur Sikri is a city in North India. It comprises red sandstone. It was the capital of Mughal Emperor Akbar. It is a UNESCO world heritage site. It is 39 km away from Agra. The architecture of the city is of Indo-Islamic.  There are royal palaces, halls, courtyards and grand avenues. Jama Masjid was the first structure to be constructed.  Buland Darwaza, Panch Mahal, Diwan-I-Aam, Diwan-I-Khaas, Sheikh Salim Chishti tomb and Birbal Bhavan monuments in Fatehpur Sikri.

HOW TO VISIT FATEHPUR SIKRI-

Kheria Airport is the nearest airport to reach Fatehpur Sikri. It is 40 kilometres away and is well-connected with the cities. Most of the airlines like Indigo Airlines, Air India, Jet Airways, SpiceJet, Indian Airlines, Go Air, Air India Express and AirAsia have regular flights to Agra. There are buses such as Deluxe and Volvo. Fatehpur Sikri Station comes before the Agra Cantt and the trains are well-linked with the Indian cities. There are trains such as Avadh Express, Punjab Mail, Karnataka Express and Jhelum Express.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF FATEHPUR SIKRI-

Fatehpur Sikri was the Mughal capital from 1571 to 1585. Akbar was assured of sons by the Sufi mystic Salim Chishti. Akbar’s son name is Salim. Salim as Jahangir ascended the throne. Akbar built a new capital at  Sikri as the Sufi saint used to live. The city was christened Fatehabad. Fateh means victory. It was known as Fatehpur Sikri. The planning and construction of the city for 15 years. Akbar planned on Persian principles and old Persian courts. The architecture is a blend of  Gujarati and Bengali. The skilled craftsmen were employed from different regions for the construction of the city.

TIPS-

  1. Visit  to Akbar’s palace had a Diwan-e-khaas and Diwan-e-aam.
  2. Reaching the Panch Mahal – a structure with five storeys and a huge platform supported by pillars.
  3. After that headed to the Jodha Palace, the shrine of Salim Chishti and the Bulund Darwaza.
