Hartebeest

Size: 48 inches at the shoulder
Weight: 165 to 350 pounds
Lifespan: 12 to 15 years
Habitat: Open plains
Diet: Herbivorous/grazer
Gestation: 8 months

The hartebeest is a large antelope that lives in savannas and woodlands in Africa. It has a long, thin face and long legs. It is one of the fastest antelopes and most enduring runners.

Hedgehog

Type: Mammal
Diet: Carnivore
Size: Head and body, 5 to 12 in (13 to 30 cm); Tail, 1 to 2 in (3 to 5 cm)
Weight: 14 to 39 oz (397 to 1,106 g)
Lifespan: 10 years 
Habitat: Variety of climates and terrains

Hedgehogs are small mammals with protective spines on their backs. There are 17 species of hedgehog. They are native to Europe, Asia and Africa. These animals root through hedges and other undergrowth in search of the small creatures that compose the bulk of their diet.

Hippopotamus

Type: Mammal
Diet: Herbivore
Average lifespan: Up to 40 years
Size: Head and body, 9.5 to 14 ft (2.8 to 4.2 m); Tail, 13.75 to 19.75 inches (35 to 50 cm)
Weight: 5,000 to 8,000 lbs (2,268 to 3,629 kg)
Habitat: Rivers, swamps and protected areas

The hippopotamus is the third largest type of land animal. They are herbivores (plant-eaters), due to their size and aggressive nature they are among Africa’s most dangerous animals. Hippo’s foot has four webbed toes which splay out to distribute weight evenly and therefore adequately support it on land. They exit and enter the water at the same spots and graze for four to five hours, covering one or two miles, with extended forays of up to five miles.

Horseshoe Crab

Type: Arthropods
Diet: Omnivore
Average lifespan: 20 years or more.
Size: A mature male ranges from 7–9 inches across the helmet-like prosoma.

Horseshoe crabs are invertebrates (animals without backbones) with ten legs, a hard shell, and a long, hard tail. They live on the sea bed, and are found on the shore. They have a shell that protects the gills, that are attached to the underside of the last pair of abdominal legs.

Hummingbird

Type: Bird
Diet: Omnivore
Average lifespan: 5 to 9 years
Size: 3 to 4 in (7 to 9 cm)
Weight: 0.07 to 0.21 oz (2 to 6 g)

The hum of a hummingbird is made by the bird’s rapid wing beats, up to 53 beats per second for a ruby-throated hummingbird. Hummingbirds are small birds in the family Trochilidae. They have the largest flight muscles in relation to body mass than any other birds. A hummingbird’s wings can beat 200 times per second. They are able to fly backwards and sideways.
