On this day, I  am taking to you to a destination that is wonder.

I thought that everyone went there.

It’s  Agra.

Agra has the glory of  architectural heritage. It has a seven wonders of the world. The Taj Mahal is the famous monument in the world.  Agra has UNESCO World Heritage sites. It is the lifeline of India. Agra has a combination of Mughal art and culture. It enhanced of Indian culture and tradition. It has monuments such as Agra Fort, Itmad-Ud- Daulah tomb and Fatehpur Sikri. The city has foodies like the famous Agra Ka Petha, chaat,Lassi and many more. It has been ideal vibrant cuisine. Agra is also known for its art and crafts such as the royal craft Pietra Dura, marble inlay and carpets.

Agra has the finest hotels in the world. Numerous five star hotels with traditional Indian architecture like an old palace or haveli. The Oberoi Amarvilas is the famous 5-star hotels in Agra for 40,000 INR (approx) a night for a moonlit view of the Taj from the balcony. Tajganj is an area near the Taj Mahal  to stay. Zostel is the most conveniently located.

How to visit Agra

A visit to Agra mainly the Taj Mahal or sites can be through  Tongas and electric tempos. Cars are not allowed to these sites. The city is also viewed by rickshaws –auto and cycle. The sightseeing is to be visited by an air conditioned taxi  on the basis of 8 hours or 80km for the day. 

 Historical Background of Agra


Agra is about more than 200 Kms away from Delhi on the western bank of the River Yamuna.  According to Hindu mythology the word ‘Agra’ is derived from agravan (a forest near Mathura) in The Hindu epic Mahabharata is known as the homeland of Lord Krishna. The city establishment by a local king in 1475. It became powerful under the Delhi Sultan Sikandar Lodi, who shifted his capital from Delhi in 1504. Agra has achieved its glory from the reign of Babur in the Mughal period.  The Emperor Akbar was a great empire builder commissioned the Agra Fort in 1565. Agra is known for the Taj Mahal as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Emperor Shah Jahan built the white marble mausoleum for his beloved  queen Mumtaz Mahal. Taj Mahal is Declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO has discovered varying emotions from wonder to ecstasy,time and inspired poetic verse.It is the symbol of undying love and flawless beauty.


The monument was commissioned in 1631 for 22 years and 20,000 artisans to complete. The city is known as Taj Ganj came up around the site. The craftsmen live and sell their wares of marble and stone inlay and replicas of the Taj. After the reign of the Aurangzeb, Agra was ruled by the Jats and the Marathas. The British under the leadership of General Lake annexed the city. It has its position as the capital of the north-western provinces. The capital of the Central Province and its High Court were shifted to Allahabad. The monuments of Agra were plundered and crafted pieces transported. The city has the historical importance and tourist potential.

Tips-

  1.  Arrive at Agra check into your hotel and either rest or freshen up. Later on in the evening, you can go shopping at the Sadar Bazaar. Apart from the shopping, you should also go for the shops that bear the exquisite designs of the craft of Pietra Dura.
  2.  Start the tour with the Taj Mahal. Except for Friday, when it is reserved for Muslims, the place should be visited in early morning.
  3.  Visit the Agra Fort.
  4. This day, you can visit Fatehpur Sikri, the capital of Akbar the Great during the 16th century. Before heading back, if you have time, do visit the tomb of  Itimad-ud-daula.
