Xantus

The mid-sized hummingbird is only found in Baja California, a state in the north-west of Mexico. The species is mainly green in color, with black cheeks and a bright white stripe behind each eye. Its calls are loud and metallic.

Xenarthra

Xenarthra means ‘strange joints’. They are only found in the Americas. Well-known xenarthrans include the giant anteater, the nine-banded armadillo, and the brown-throated sloth. They have long, cylindrical braincases to house their relatively small brains. Their forefeet have large claws and are modified for either climbing or digging.

Xenops

Xenops are small birds found in South and Central America. They have brown backs and distinctive eye stripes. They hunt for insects on the bark of trees.

Xerus

Xerus are a genus in the squirrel family, Sciuridae. They are burrowing animals. They live in arid, rocky or grassland habitats. Its tail is almost as long again. It is predominantly sandy-brown in color . They feed on crops, and are seen as pests in some regions.
