Sleep and acne: Sleep deprivation can cause acne for various reasons. The most important reason is that it reduces the immunity by decreasing the capacity of the immune system to fight the bacteria that causes acne. The skin thus becomes susceptible to acne. The other reason for acne is that lack of sleep leads to inflammation, which makes the pimples which are small to big red colour blobs. Lack of sleep leads to resistance to insulin when the body becomes insulin resistant the rate at which the skin cells grow reduces. That essentially means that there less new skin cells and more dead skin cells which results in acne as pores are blocked.

Sleep deprivation affects cortisol levels: These are hormones that help the body to respond to stress. When the cortisol levels are high, the body’s circadian rhythm is affected, and thus normal sleep/wake cycle is disturbed. People feel sleepy during the day and are awake during the night. Sleeping for less than seven hours can result in high cortisol levels and cause inflammation which occurs in adverse effects on the skin leading to acne, premature ageing, etc. Check if your mattress is the reason you are sleep deprived if so go mattress shopping at Wakefit to ensure that you sleep enough.

Effect of sleeping late on skin: The body clock and the natural day-night clock are in tune with each other unless it is interfered on. When the night breaks out, the body cycle slows down signaling to the body that it is time to sleep. During sleep, all the healing process takes place, it detoxifies and repairs. If you interfere with the sleeping pattern, the skin and the other body organs do not get the needed time to rejuvenate resulting in acne and other more severe conditions like weak body organs.

Ensure quality sleep: Many people sleep for long hours and yet wake up feeling tired. Long hours of sleeping is not quality sleep. If you don’t get a deep sleep, mind and the body will not feel fresh. The skin is also affected as it does not get enough time to relax and leads to poor skin health and acne.
